Song lifts our up our hearts, filling us with joy and honouring the God who created us to sing. At Christ Church, music weaves through all of our worship. We love traditional hymns and old gospel tunes, and we try to keep our selections familiar and singable. We also sing some of our prayers. Our 10:00 service is accompanied by the organ.

All parishioners are welcome to join the choir, providing musical leadership to the rest of the congregation. Choir members attend a weekly rehearsal, except in the summer.

Organ Scholar

Mei came to Christ Church in October 2022 as the parish's first organ scholar, shortly after moving to Shelburne from Sackville, Nova Scotia. Mei loves music, and had been studying piano for seven years before starting at Christ Church. She's excited to be part of the community! As organ scholar, Mei plays at the 10:00 service three times a month, attends the choir rehearsals, and receives lessons on transferring her piano skills to the organ.

On the third Sunday of the month, long-time attendee Robert MacKay plays the organ in a country-gospel style.

Choral Scholars Program
In Autumn 2022, we will be launching the Christ Church Choral Scholars program, which will offer teens and young adults musical instruction, regular performance time, and a small honorarium for singing at the 10:00 Sunday service. We hope that this initiative will give young people from the Shelburne area an opportunity to develop their skills and feel valued and professional as young musicians. As part of this program, we are also recruiting young keyboard players, who will be paid a larger honorarium and will receive separate instruction in organ-playing techniques.

Please contact Father Benjamin to schedule an audition. And don't be scared by the word "audition": it will be low-pressure and won't require extensive preparation on your end. It's more about getting a sense of what skills our singers are starting with than seeing whether our students "make the cut."

Country Gospel Singers

Every few weeks, a group of musical folks from our congregation play a set of old-timey gospel tunes before the 10:00 service on the organ and guitar.

Maritime Kitchen Parties

Music is a big part of our life together after church, too! Every few months we like to kick back for a traditional Maritime kitchen party in the church hall with live folk music. We have hosted both Newfoundland and Acadian-style kitchen parties, complete with the matching dishes. These events are, of course, open to the whole community.
